Lackawanna Schools Select Johnson Controls for Second Phase of

District-Wide Energy Efficiency Overhaul

Johnson Controls (NYSE: JCI), the global leader in energy efficiency and sustainability, is helping the Lackawanna City School District further reach its environmental goals through the second phase of an aggressive energy savings program.

The second phase of the program is anticipated to save the district approximately $2 million in energy costs over 18 years. This is in addition to the $3.8 million savings from phase one enhancements, which were completed in 2007.

Phase two enhancements feature facility management system upgrades, updates to heating, air conditioning and ventilating systems, and lighting retrofits at all buildings throughout the district. They follow a successful first phase of improvements, which included upgrades to the natural gas well, which has helped the district realize more than $330,000 in energy savings alone.

“The energy and cost savings from the first part of the energy program have exceeded projections to date,” said Frederick A. Wille, superintendent of schools, Lackawanna City School District. “Phase two is a natural step towards our goal of overall efficiency, and we’re confident that Johnson Controls is a trusted partner to help us reach our goal.”

The program is part of an energy savings performance contract with Johnson Controls that implements facility enhancements in phases. It enables the district to significantly reduce utility costs and its carbon footprint while using savings to repay the project capital investment over the term of the contract without increasing operating budgets.

When completed, the improvements will reduce the district’s carbon emissions by more than 17,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide per year. This equates to eliminating more than 3,700 passenger cars from roads through 2027.

The program’s second phase is slated for completion in 2011.
