Lackawanna Middle School Science Teacher Combines Love of Fishing with Creative Learning Opportunities for Students

Lackawanna Middle School Science Teacher John Miller has found a wonderful way to combine his love for fishing with his love for teaching his 8th grade students. This will be the fourth year raising Brown Trout fish from eggs. The Randolph Fish Hatchery donates the eggs each October.  Students then help to raise the trout in special aquariums and each the spring, the young trout are released into Lake Erie with a permit from the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation.  Mr. Miller and his classrooms have collaborated with Trout Unlimited in order to bring this "Trout in the Classroom" project to Lackawanna Middle School.

The classroom has also received donations for the Lackawanna Middle School Spring Fishing Club from local organizations such as the Niagara Musky Association, Erie County Federation of Sportsman Clubs and the Safari Club. These groups see value in introducing and encouraging students to participate in the outdoors and have donated to the club in order to promote the cause.

The trout habitat in the classroom includes a tank and covering to protect the developing eggs from light.  Once students observe the fish freely swimming, the front cover of the tank is removed. The fish are cared for in this environment until students, along with Mr. Miller, release the fish.
