Diagnostic Testing FAQ

Lackawanna City School District Diagnostic Testing Program

The Erie County Department of Health (ECDOH) and New York State Department of Health

(NYSDOH) have supplied school districts across NYS with multiple COVID-19 rapid antigen tests. Because of this, LCSD will be implementing our own “on site” COVID-19 diagnostic testing program. This initiative will allow symptomatic students and staff a convenient, safe, and documented COVID-19 testing option.

Effective January 27, 2022, LCSD will begin our “on site” COVID-19 diagnostic testing program to allow symptomatic individuals (students and staff) to avoid school exclusion by testing negative on a COVID-19 rapid antigen test.

Testing will be conducted as outlined in the FAQs below.

LCSD COVID-19 Diagnostic Testing Program:  FAQs

Q. Who is eligible to participate in the LCSD COVID-19 Diagnostic Testing Program?

A. LCSD will provide COVID-19 rapid antigen testing for LCSD students and staff that are experiencing COVID-19 like symptoms, including: fever/chills, cough, shortness of breath, fatigue, muscle body/aches, headache, loss of taste or smell, sore throat, congestion or runny nose, nausea/vomiting and diarrhea (per CDC).

Q. When and where will students and staff be COVID-19 tested?

A. Students and staff that develop COVID-19- like symptoms during the school day should immediately visit the school health office for medical assessment. Students and staff that have provided LCSD COVID-19 testing consent, will have the option to be tested “on site” by our trained school nurse in the health office, at the time of their visit.

Students and staff that develop COVID-19- like symptoms outside of the school day, must stay home from school (follow applicable attendance procedures) and report symptoms to their school nurse. Upon reporting symptoms, the school nurse will review the LCSD COVID-19 return to school protocol for symptomatic individuals and refer you to a private testing facility and/or the LCSD COVID-19 Diagnostic Testing Clinic (testing performed by trained school nurses). The referral-only LCSD COVID-19 Diagnostic Testing Clinic location and hours are as follows:

  • Mondays: 2:30 PM-3:30 PM., LHS Health Office
  • Thursdays: 2:30 PM-3:30 PM., LHS Health Office
  • LHS Health Office: 500 Martin Rd., Lackawanna, NY 14218 (Main Entrance)
  • Face coverings and social distancing required at all times
  • This is not a walk-in clinic, you must have a referral from the building nurse.

*Note, COVID-19 diagnostic testing will only be conducted on school days (excludes breaks, holidays and weekends).

Q. What type of COVID-19 test will be administered on students and staff?

A. LCSD will utilize non-invasive (short nasal or saliva swabs) rapid antigen tests to conduct COVID-19 diagnostic testing. Results are confirmed and recorded within 15 minutes.

Q. What happens after my COVID-19 test is administered?

A. Students and staff that are tested during the school day will be required to wait in the health office or isolation room until results are confirmed by the school nurse. Individuals that produce a negative test result, will be permitted to go back to class if feeling well enough (mild symptoms and no fever). Students and staff that receive a positive test result and/or experiencing severe symptoms will remain isolated and sent home immediately (parent/guardian must pick up their child). The school nurse will review the LCSD COVID-19 return to school protocol. LCSD will conduct school-based close contact procedures in the event an individual tests positive.

Students and staff that are tested at the LCSD COVID-19 Testing Clinic are required to leave the clinic immediately following the administered COVID-19 test and isolate until results are communicated. The school nurse administering the test will contact all students and staff within 1-2 hours with their test results (via phone). Individuals that produce a negative test result, will be permitted to go back to school if feeling well enough (mild symptoms and no fever). Students and staff that receive a positive test result must remain isolated and will be required to follow the LCSD return to school protocol.

Q. Is there a cost associated with participation in the LCSD COVID-19 Diagnostic Testing Program?

A. No, families do not have to pay for testing through the LCSD COVID-19 Diagnostic Testing Program. The district has secured enough COVID-19 rapid antigen test kits through NYS to implement this program.

Q. What will the district do with test results?

A. All tests performed under the LCSD COVID-19 Diagnostic Testing Program will be reported to ECLRS and NYSDOH COVID-19 Report Card on a daily basis. Results will also be reported daily to ECDOH.

Students and staff can request a copy of their test results upon request to their school nurse.

Q. How do I sign up to participate in the LCSD COVID-19 Diagnostic Testing Program?aff can request a copy of their test results upon request to their school nurse.

A. LCSD must receive consent from parents/guardians for their student to participate in the LCSD Diagnostic Testing Program. Consent for students and staff can be accomplished by completing the Consent Form: COVID-19 Diagnostic Testing & TTS form located on the district website and return to the school nurse.
