In today’s math classrooms, learning goes beyond getting the right answer. It’s about understanding and explaining thinking. When students share their reasoning with peers, they deepen their own understanding and learn new strategies from others.
Student-to-student discourse builds confidence, strengthens communication skills, and helps students see mistakes as part of the learning process. Talking through math also encourages perseverance and problem-solving, as students work together through challenges. These discussions prepare students for real-world situations where collaboration and clear explanations are essential.
By asking students to explain their thinking, we help them become stronger, more confident mathematical thinkers.
