Students work in class.

This week in our 4th grade classrooms, students became fraction experts by using hands-on models to add and subtract fractions!

Instead of just solving problems on paper, students explored fractions with:

  • Fraction circles

  • Fraction bars

  • Number lines

  • Visual area models

By building and comparing fractions with models, students could see how pieces fit together. They discovered how two smaller fractions can combine to make a whole and how subtracting fractions means finding the missing piece.

Using models helps students to develop a deeper understanding, explain their thinking using math vocabulary, and make connections between visual and numerical representations.

We love watching our students use math tools to reason, justify, and collaborate. Way to go, 4th grade mathematicians!
