Kindergarten and first grade students in Mrs. Heinen’s reading groups have been hard at work building their literacy skills through the Orton-Gillingham approach.
This structured approach uses direct, explicit and multisensory methods to support memory and learning. Students have especially enjoyed using tactile pathways, including writing with crayon on paper placed over plastic mesh to create sensory feedback while reinforcing sight words.
The activity, which students call “bumpy writing,” has quickly become one of their favorite parts of the routine. Through hands-on learning, students are strengthening their reading skills while staying engaged and excited to learn.
