Martin Road students work in class

Third grade students are diving into the concept of elapsed time in a hands-on and engaging way. This week, Ms. Rozwood's class has been buzzing with the sound of ticking mini clocks and the chatter of young mathematicians solving real-world word problems. Elapsed time is an essential life skill that helps children understand how much time has passed between events.

To reinforce this concept, students worked through a series of word problems, such as, “Megan starts eating breakfast at 9:54 am. Tell what time she is done with breakfast if she takes 6 minutes, 10 minutes, 20 minutes, and 24 minutes to eat.”

To solve these problems, students used individual mini clocks with movable hour and minute hands. This visual and tactile method helped them break down each scenario and better understand how time progresses.
